Gay men eyebrows
I figured I would start my blogging career at the Huffington Post talking about something that I am currently obsessed with Why the hell are men plucking their eyebrows and how did it start? It is so incredibly unsexy and unnatural, and somehow has turned into a trend for the last 10 years, and is getting worse by the minute. I have just returned from Italy and was shocked to see how many straight guys had tweezed and plucked their brows, and had combined it with shaping their side burns. Even in New York, from the deli guy to the Wall Street trader -- this phenomena has spread love wildfire.
I have struggled to understand how it all started and which dimwit decided that if he plucked his eyebrows to be pencil thin it would look unnoticeable and somehow hot. It's shocking to see these enormous muscled guys strutting around with half their eyebrows.
Being born and bred in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, I have witnessed the beginning of many trends, from the Guidos in "Saturday Night Fever" to the open of the pale rappers and the "Beastie Boys." I figure that this movement was definite
Living in Japan a several years back, there were a lot of things that I never stopped wondering about: the astonishing number of Japanese with crooked legs, why everything had to be so cute, why was everyone so well-dressed? Eventually I was able to demand other foreigners living in Japan or some Japanese friends to explain some phenomena.
Here are the questions and explanations Ive gathered along the way. None of these are definitive answers, just sort of ideas, theories and observations. I dont have the hard facts to help them up so perform take the following with a light heart.
Why execute Japanese have crooked legs?
Its a thing. Toes pointed inward, knees slightly bent. Nature or nurture?
Theory #1: Its because of how they sit. The prevailing theory is that Japanese legs get bent out of shape from sitting seiza, on the floor in the traditional formal manner, with knees together and the lower legs tucked under the bottom and thighs.
Theory #2: In Japanese culture, crooked legs were seen as feminine and cute. It is believed that the idea came from the days of wearing k

Although I've always wanted this particular superhuman power, I've never been very good at detecting other men's sexual orientation. Findings from a recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, however, advise I may be underestimating my gaydar abilities.
The January study investigated people's ability to identify homosexual men from pictures of their faces alone. In an initial experiment, researchers Nicholas Rule and Nalini Ambady from Tufts University perused online dating sites and carefully selected 45 vertical male faces and 45 gay male faces. All of these photos were matched for orientation (only faces shown looking forward were used) and facial alterations (none of the images contained jewelry, glasses or facial hair). To control for context, the faces were also trim and pasted onto a white background for the study. These 90 faces were then sho
Dear David the Fashion Expert,
Have you noticed that gay men are beginning to pluck their eyebrows in high arches fancy Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo did in the s? What gives here?
~Mr. Furrowed Brow
Dear Mr. Furrowed Brow,
I have a lot of very witty correspondents. Furrow away, my dear. I contain only begun to notice this and it is probably a reaction to straight men getting so well groomed that they are plucking their eyebrows also. So gay men have to go one step further.
I don't dish enough people tell me, so you may want to know that the high arched brow came about because Marlene Dietrich had her face lifted in about and they pulled her forehead straight up. Her eyebrows went way up and her hairline way halfway support across her head. Weird looking. So they made it fashionable. Women plucked their brows completely out and penciled them in high. Think Edith Piaf. Are all these references a half a century behind you? :)
Maybe with women becoming so much more equal gay men crave to take advantage of it and become more glam. Andy Warhol always liked to
