This compelling and loving fraternity may, in fact, be what brought viewers endorse repeatedly, including a movie, “Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom,” as well as the “Noah’s Arc” short, and now, a new full-length feature “Noah’s Arc: The Movie,” debuting on Paramount+ on June In the movie, filled with equal measures of laughs and tears, Chance, who has faced a devastating loss, finds his dependable friends there, ready to assist and comfort him at a moment’s notice. Emmy Award-winning Producer Director Jeffrey Schwarz has amassed an extraordinary résumé of documenting remarkable LGBTQ+ pioneers and crucial moments in homosexual history. His latest highlight documentary Commitment to Life, which journals the capital of Los Angeles reaction to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, premiered earlier this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and will also be presented at Outfest Other notable work from Schwarz includes the critically acclaimed HBO doc Vito, I Am Divine, Tab Hunter Confidential, The Fabulous Allan Carr and Boulevard, A Hollywood Story. This interview was conducted over Zoom.
I am Divine and Vito are two documentaries on historic LGBTQ+ pioneers. What draws you to highlight iconic queer figures?
In the 80’s and 90’s a discussion of existence gay wasn’t really reflected in movies other than as a joke or something to be ashamed about. Schwarz cut his professional teeth operational for legendary doc duo Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (who won Oscars for Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt and The Times of Harvey Milk). I met him years ago when I was in production school and spent a semester interning on The Celluloid Closet(). Schwarz had the enviable position of listening to and transcribing celebrity interviews with people appreciate Cher, Susan Sarandon and Tony Curtis (who said some lovely gnarly things about working with Marilyn Monroe on the Billy Wilder classic Some Like It Hot).
I published an initial interview with Schwarz back in September about his new documentary The Fabulous Allan Carr, but below are further excerpts from our phone Q&A.
