Gods and Mortals Digital Program
Explore gods and mortals
Nick Richardson
Gods, and mortals, and Wagner – oh my! A concert in the woods has never felt so mysterious yet so familiar. The melodies penned by the German composer possess long been a part of our cultural thought. Even if you don’t recognize the titles of Wagner’s operas, you’ve almost certainly heard (and hummed) his rousing tunes.
Wagner paired the grand scale of his music with bold storytelling, writing his hold libretto for each opera. His works tackle character, magic, and the psyche. He found inspiration from Norse mythology – enough inspiration to write four full-length operas, together established as the Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen). Other sources for his works include the legends of the Holy Grail (for Parsifal) and the Flying Dutchman (for his opera of the identical name).
An epic composer telling epic stories begs for an epic venue. Link us in the excellent outdoors for a heart-racing adventure through Wagner’s repertoire.

I had come up from Stanford for the day to connect with him, and to catch up. Two years had passed since I had last seen him, on a bluff overlooking the Yale campus in New Haven, at the beginning of my cross-country road-trip to return to school in California. After spending the summer living and working in San Francisco, it was now John who was leaving California to return to school in Connecticut.
I had received a letter from him earlier in July saying he wanted to meet whenever I had a chance. John had recently finished his junior year at Yale and reach to San Francisco to work as a summer intern at Mother Jones magazine. But he also came for a larger and more important reason – to realize himself, and
