Chopin’s love letters to men ‘deliberately’ hushed up, claims recent programme

27 November ,

History has written over Chopin’s relationships with men, a music journalist claims, after researching the Polish Romantic’s intimate letters.

A radio programme has claimed melody archivists and biographers have deliberately ignored Frédéric Chopin’s interest in men, in order to build the Polish Sentimental composer conform with conservative norms.

Chopin’s Men, a two-hour-long display that aired on Switzerland’s SRF arts channel, claims the composer’s letters contain been deliberately mistranslated, hints at his interest in ‘cottaging’ ignored, and rumours of his affairs with women exaggerated.

Presenter and music correspondent, Moritz Weber, started reading through Chopin’s letters during the first lockdown and discovered a “flood of declarations of love aimed at men”, some overtly erotic and with smatterings of innuendo. In one, Chopin described rumours of his affairs with women as a “cloak for secret feelings”.

Chopin’s most studied love affair to date was with the French novelist George

People in Poland, one of the most homophobic countries in Europe, are riled after a documentary claimed national icon Frédéric Chopin had male lovers

People in Poland — one of the most prominent anti-LGBT countries in Europe — are smarting after a Swiss documentary claimed that their national icon, the composer Frédéric Chopin, had male lovers.

"Chopin's Men," aired by SRF on November 13, argued that experts and biographers of the 19th-century musician had ignored and mistranslated letters that show a "flood of declarations of love aimed at men."

One of the letters, written by Chopin to his male ally Tytus Wojciechowski, said: "You don't like being kissed. Please, let me perform it today. You contain to pay me for the dirty dream I had about you last night."

Moritz Weber, the documentary's producer, told CNN that there was no mistrust that the letters referred to romance. "He's talking about love so directly with men," he said.

People in Poland have initiate the claim hard to swallow.

Chopin May Have Had Male Lovers, and Poland Is Mad

Poland is known for lots of things: kielbasa, pierogi, Pope John Paul II, and, of course, some of the most aggressively anti-LGBTQ attitudes in the Western nature.

Same-sex marriage is prohibited in the nation, and multiple Polish political leaders have been outspoken in their condemnation of LGBTQ individuals. Earlier this year, Andrzej Duda called homosexuality &#;an ideology worse than communism,&#; and the country has been named the worst in the EU for LGBTQ rights.

Naturally, a new documentary claiming that Poland&#;s golden lad, composer Frederic Chopin, may hold had homosexual affairs, isn&#;t sitting well with the conservative folks of Poland.

&#;Chopin&#;s Men,&#; a Swiss radio documentary that aired earlier this month, argues scholars and biographers have long ignored evidence pointing to Chopin&#;s quixotic involvement with other men, mistranslating letters in which the composer penned a &#;flood of declarations of love aimed at men.&#;

,

In no ambiguous terms those letters contained ardent and partly erotic declarations of love. They were addressed to men – in particular to his Tytus.

«As always, I lug your letters with me. What joy it will be to pull out a letter of yours and assure myself that you love me; or at least to gaze at the hand and the writing of him, whom only I am able to love!» (3/27/)

The Letters have Disappeared

Of all the things it is the very letters Chopin received from Tytus and from other men that are presumed lost. They are likely to also contain homoerotic text:

«Dearest Tytus! I received your last letter, in which you tell me to brush you.» (11/14/)

Chopin’s letters to those men were written in Polish – too high a barrier for many researchers. They thus depend on tran
