The letters in the 2SLGBTQIA+ acronym represent the accompanying identities: Two-spirited (2S), womxn loving womxn, gay, bisexual, transgender, homosexual, intersex, asexual, plus all other sexual and gender minorities. 

2SLGBTQIA+ people face higher rates of poverty, stigma, and marginalization, which puts this community at greater risk for sexual and gender-based violence. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community also faces tall rates of hate-motivated aggression, which can often seize the form of sexual assault. Moreover, the ways in which society both hypersexualizes 2SLGBTQIA+ people and stigmatizes their relationships can lead to intimate boyfriend violence that stems from internalized homophobia and shame.

In a survey, Statistics Canada found that sexual and gender minorities in Canada are almost three times more likely than heterosexual and cisgender Canadians to report that they had been physically or sexually assaulted in the past 12 months.

In recent years in the UK there has been recognition that domestic violence and exploitation (DVA) takes place in homosexual, bisexual and/or transgender relationships and a parallel and emerging body of research which has begun to explore and develop understandings about how and why this occurs, and whether and how victim/survivors seek help. However, despite this growing literature, there has been no dedicated research on those who are the abusive partners in same-sex, bisexual and/or trans relationships, and consequently there has been little evidence to inform the development of services to address their behaviours. Black and Queer: A writing workshop with Chloe Filani

Lakeside Theatre, Colchester

Artist, performer, poet and writer working with and in her lived experiences as a black transitioned woman of Nigerian Yoruba and Eshan heritage, Chloe Filani examines the themes of identity and authority structures. In this practical workshop, participants will examine their writing practice through sensory interaction and conversations with objects in groups. You will be encouraged to think and lazy down and be show in your body and your surroundings. In a facilitated space you will have the opportunity to create poetry through this process and to study aloud your work.

Chloe will also read poetry from Black, Queer authors to help you explore recent poetry of Black origin.

This workshop is FREE for all University of Essex students.
